Cattle Egret

Cattle Egret, Ardea ibis.

This relatively small egret, Ardea ibis, is found all along the east and north coasts of Australia, and is also present on every continent.

It commonly forages with cattle, who disturb worms, grasshopper and frogs with their feet. These birds were just outside of Moruya on the river flats beside the highway.

  1. Cattle egrets arrived in the northern tier of states a few years ago. I’ve seen them only occasionally. We see the larger Great Egret (aka American Egret) more often. All of the egrets are handsome birds and I wish there were more of them nearby.

    • isn’t it interesting how they are spreading? i wonder what it is about conditions that suit them? i really did not imagine they were near you since they originally came from southern asia!

  2. I love learning about the different birds. Now I need to try to remember the information. That’s always been the tricky part for me 🙂

  3. Beautiful Egret. I see a similar bird all over outer Houston. Mostly close to the lakes, creeks and anything with greens. And yes, close to cows and horses. The first time I saw them, I thought they were statues. They would keep still for so long until you start going towards them. Fascinating creatures. Thanks for sharing a wonderful post.
