I bought a little sports camera, one that would shoot underwater. It was not a Canon, the brand I am used to, and it had some issues I could not easily reconcile, such as micro sd card, and a very small battery with a short life. Still it was fun until it stopped working because water leaked inside it. When it was replaced under warranty I sold it on ebay, and bought the Canon equivalent.
The Canon D20 is waterproof to 10m, and shockproof from 1.5m. It has a normal SD card and the usual battery that holds a good charge. Best of all I already know about the operating system, so it ‘comes naturally’ to me. It arrived last week, I charged the battery, inserted a card, and took it to the beach.
The tide was very very low, a rare sight! Conditions were perfect for swimming, with almost no swell, a good time to practice swimming strokes.
I did not put the camera underwater, but let it get wet from spray as the tiny curlers foamed and splashed. Visibility was poor due to seaweed in the water, so there was no point in looking underneath until things clear up.
Luckily a few waves had just enough energy to carry a person jubilantly towards the shore. After this I ran back to the beach with the camera, then joined in the surfing, in between a bit of freestyle or backstroke.
As we walked home I just had to capture these tropical waterlilies, the pink and blue growing together. It looks as though my new D20 takes great pics!
great shots
thanks Cindy, in a beautiful place it is hard to go wrong!

Great clarity and color!
I was pleased with that too Angeline!
It seems like a good little camera given the shots you’ve shown.
thanks Charles, I have some more to post, it is performing well 🙂
Great shots! I am fond of the Canon camera as well.
BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!
funny how we are better to stick with the ones we know and trust!
Doesn’t it! Added to which, it’s a safe camera to take for walks on the beach or clambering around the rocks – safe if you should encounter a rogue wave, or fall … How enterprising of you to on-sell the replacement camera 🙂
I had not sold anything on ebay before so it was a learning curve … all successful and with the $50 cashback Canon promotion the new camera only cost me $60 … a bargain. It feels very solid so you are right, good for the rocks too 😀
Beautiful, knowing you will have great. fun with new camera.
Your women portraits are a gem, they make me want to meet every one of them.
how nice!
my canons are not waterproof
so won’t be getting those shots 🙂
You stay with Canon too then? We have four different models now, and I would like to try a 4/3 micro camera … who knows one day we might have five! What do you have?
an old powershot, a 7d, and an xa20. all work nicely above the water 🙂
ha ha, much safer that way 😉

Looks like a great choice, I’m a Canon fan too!
I am sighing with relief, so glad to be back with Canon for this tough little camera 🙂
he sì! tu e la tua macchina fotografica siete speciali!
buona giornata, cara
Great camera and an impressive price. I have a Panasonic Lumix but it’s not waterproof; but, then, I am rarely near water 😦
I know what you mean, living here I think I will use it quite a bit!
Thanks for the camera review!
what fun – love the 1st shot even if its the driest!
all that length of seaweed strewn beach!
What a great little camera. I’ve always bought Cannon, so easy to use and you have captured some great shots.
and I always think your photos are great too …. we have Canon in common!

Ha Ha… I like it… 🙂
If anyone will put the underwater camera to good use it will be you, Christine. The photos you’ve shared are lovely examples. 🙂
thanks for your vote of confidence Debra, I have just realised that we no longer have our snorkels and masks … so when we replace them I will get out there on a calm day!

I love the pics and info about your new camera. I know the G.O is doing gis usual extensive research as he would like a new camera, and I don’t think he’s thought of this option but it’s great, and I’ll get him to look into the Canon D20’s and if it’s not what he wants I might just get it myself 🙂
I am really pleased, little, tough and practical, I took some great macros today as we drove home from Green Cape and stopped in the heathland 🙂

Well done. A new camera takes some getting used to, but your photos are lovely, especially the water lilies. So pretty! 🙂

Looks good Christine – and it’s more waterproof than my 5D/7D which are best described a showerproof 🙂 Those Water Lilies look rather nice!
I like the waterproof element, it will be my beach camera now, which practical, living here!
