Straw-necked Ibis

The Straw-necked Ibis (Threskiornis spinicollis) has been rather hard to capture. Even when they are feeding in paddocks by the road they swiftly move away if a vehicle stops near them. So here are some photos from yesterday when they were on the river flats near the Moruya River, with Australian White Ibis. The views here are lovely, away north and west where cattle are grazing, away to the mountains that almost surround our beautiful town.

  1. Lovely photos. The subtle colours and straw neck feather embellishment make it a stunning bird, as opposed to its unpopular city kin. Last time we were at Taylors Arm, there were flocks of a similar looking birds along the river, and I wondered what they were – some sort of Ibis it seems, similar but different to yours. The other 2 photos also bear an uncanny resemblance to the views along the Nambucca River as we drive out.

  2. to get closer, get a blind and gradually move yourself and the blind closer, little by little, the bird will not see you moving inside the blind, just a suggestion, great image thanks MJ

  3. What a lovely shot Christine! And an equally lovely landscape. I think the black headed Ibis is the most common around here. Haven’t seen any like this one.
