White Tern and Chick

This White Tern laid a single egg on the flat branch of an old pine tree. The egg hatched after 28 days, and now the parents are raising the chick, who looks very fat and fluffy. Apparently residents of Lord Howe are very fond of the White Terns and regularly check that they are still safely on their branch after strong winds or storms. The chicks develop long sharp claws very early to help them cling to the branch until they are ready to fly.
