White-eared Honeyeater

New bird of the week, found after spending an hour in the banksia bushland near the beach here. I stayed as still as possible, creeping from tree to tree when necessary, watching all the little birds darting about. One of my favourites, a Grey Fantail, came close several times, but I could not capture him. However the more I watch the more possible it will be next time! I had turned for home when this beauty sat right in front of me on a low branch beside the path. He stayed for at least a minute, so there was no excuse for missing 🙂 Here is the White-eared Honeyeater, (Lichenostomus leucotis) feeding on nectar from a Banksia integrifolia flower.

  1. Thanks for the time frame you gave on this. I’ve been wondering how much (and I know it is individual and unique each time) but it was fun to know the whole activity of the “shoot.”

    • yes and i was very grateful! when i finally manage to get some part of a distant tree in focus the birds all move somewhere else … and i might ask nicely but they no longer want to return to that particular spot … of course!!!! i will learn how to speed up i am sure 🙂

  2. A noted photographer once told me, ” you have to stay until the rabbits dance”, usually at sundown or later, :), great shot and worth your effort, what is the tree? MJ

    • Banksia integrifolia, i will do a post on them soon, maybe today, they are beautiful! Love your advice about waiting until the rabbits dance … like Mike in his tree waiting for the foxes!!!

  3. These are wonderful photos, Christine. Your birds seem so exotic compared to what we have in Michigan. Their colors and patterns are almost always more brilliant than the birds in our northern climate. Thanks for sharing them with us.
