Stumpy the Sooty

Like all of us, birds can live with handicaps. Stumpy has been around on our beach for several years, a Sooty Oystercatcher missing one foot. Here are some photos of him, and a few other recent Oystercatcher images.

Determination, patience and courage are the only things needed to improve any situation.

  1. Oh I love these photos, and the slideshow gives the birds a playful look. As if they are singing – “I’m walking carefree in my own world, I’m happy and content, and that’s enough for me!”

Loved this post. I’m feeling the same now. Thanks! πŸ™‚

  2. What’s that story about the dog, something like: Lost dog, missing one eye, one ear, has only three legs. Answers to the name, Lucky.

    • yes margie, almost comical, but such serious distinguished birds on the beach, and so dextrous with that long bill, the pippies dont stand a chance πŸ™‚

  3. It always breaks my heart to see an injured creature, I know he’s coping well but I can’t help wondering how it happened and how painful it must have been 😦

  4. You get some characters who survive with bad injuries in the natural world. I used to have a female sparrow who clearly had dislocated her hip at some stage but she kept coming round to visit the feeding station for several years πŸ™‚

    • nature is so inspiring, some things have a tenuous grip on life like new ducklings, while others battle on regardless with all kinds of difficulties … thanks for the sparrow tale πŸ™‚

let's chat about this ...
