Salutations to the Goddess

You have been reading here about a western view of the Divine Feminine, and a little about Quan Yin …but here is an ancient hymn to the Goddess from Hindu tradition.

Salutations to the Supreme Goddess, who is always auspicious.

Salutations to Her, the fundamental cause of this universe and the power which sustains it.
With our full attention we offer salutations to Her.

We offer salutations to the Goddess.
who on the one hand is terrifying,
and on the other is eternally supporting the universe.
She is the moon and the moonlight, and the embodiment of happiness,
Salutations to Her again and again.

She is welfare, prosperity, and success.
She is both the good fortune and the misfortune of kings and rulers.
Salutations to Her.

Salutations to the compassionate Goddess
who supports us during difficulties.
She is the essence and the aurthor of all the events of this world.
She is knowledge and discrimination.
Her complexion is bluish.

We offer salutations to the Goddess,
who is at once the most gentle and the most terrible.
She alone is the support of the world, and She is the power of will.
Salutations to Her.

From the Fifth Mahatmya of Chandi.

The Devi Mahatmyam or Devi Mahatmya (Sanskritdevīmāhātmyam, देवीमाहात्म्यम्), or “Glory of the Goddess“) is a Hindu text describing the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura.
